La Libertad Ecuador is situated between Salinas and Ballenita. It is the commercial and industrial center of the province of Santa Elena.
It rarely gets mentioned yet it is the heart of the peninsula and home of the majority of the suppliers of goods and services to folks living in Salinas and as far away as Montanita. They will often come for 'supplies' that may not be found in the smaller communities on the outer edge of the province.
Because people tend to just drive through and/or pop in for goods or services and leave, many only tend to see the two 'main drags' while the rest of the city remains a mystery.
Here is a view from the pier looking back to some ocean front homes.
Yes, there is industry here however this is one of the reasons the majority of the city is paved and has fabulously groomed and landscaped green areas. The tax base is here.
There are also fabulous & trendy and/or 'tipico' restaurants to meet all budgets, a mall, numerous shopping areas, the largest 'mercado' in the province, a malecon that is well maintained without potholes and tripping hazards, two separate beach areas, fish landing and the list goes on......
It is difficult to find accurate information on population however Libertad is noted to be the largest in terms of area and population of the main 3 cities in the province; (somewhere between 70 and 100 thousand depending on where you read). (Santa Elena and Salinas being the 2 other principle towns).
Here are some locals hard at work:
It doesn't get any fresher than this.
